"E-Nation Saltwater Fishing - To Tournament or not to Tournament"

07/12/2011:  To Tournament or not to Tournament....

Hi and welcome to the E-Nation Online Community.

If you were to ask yourself what would be the most satisfying, relatively inexpensive, highly rewarding, steep leaning opportunity, extremely enjoyable and a challenging experience all at the same time that one could take part in? The resounding answer would have to be a team based tournament, and just a short 12 months ago I did just that I signed up for the Berkley Evinrude Team Series (BETS). This team based style tournament has been an absolute revelation, immensely successful and the numbers of new participants to this style of tournament have been astronomical.

Each round has seen an average of 66 teams with the pinnacle reaching a massive 80 boats competing at Lake Macquarie. After six rounds at various locations in NSW, the top 20 teams were selected to have a crack at a grand prize of $20,000 for 1st place, $6,000 for 2nd and $4,000 for 3rd, not bad for two days work! And it happened alongside the Sydney International Boat Show with a purpose built stage and tank at Darling Harbour, one of Sydneyís most famous tourist attractions. The weather was picture perfect, Sydney City skyline as a backdrop, and a massive crowd.

Not only was there cash prizes for all qualifying rounds there were countless prizes on offer for a top 10 placing that included Lowrance sounders, Electric motors, Sunglasses, Freezers, Fishing tackle, etc. The list being so long it would fill a book.

Now whilst itís safe to say I never threatened in making the top 20 invitational list for the Grand Final, I did get a taste for the BETS team event and itís most likely I will front up for my home waters round again. Win, lose or draw it doesnít matter to me as I enjoyed it and didnít take it too seriously.

One thing I can categorically state is that Team based events all over the East coast of Australia, central or West coast are by far the most popular, fastest growing and relaxed type tournament you can participate in by country mile.

So what are you waiting for, get involved and be part of the movement. Until next time stay safe and get casting!
